Making Fiction out of Facts

February 15-18,  2010 / Instructor: Justin Henderson

I wrote three murder mysteries a couple of years ago, all featuring the same female, thirtysomething amateur sleuth, Lucy Ripken. Her “adventures” took place in Jamaica, New Mexico, and both coasts of Mexico, including one, X Dames, that transpires right here in sunny Sayulita. These are all places that I’ve been to, for short or long periods; and Lucy, the main character, is a composite based on myself, Justin Henderson, and my wife, Donna Day.

How does one transform the facts of one’s life into fiction that can sell? This workshop will discuss capturing a sense of place, and making it into something new without betraying its real essence; it will cover the reinvention of real people as fictional characters—where to draw the line, or not, when making a real person into a character, what traits, physical or psychological, are most useful, and how to integrate “real” events into an invented plot. I’ll use my own work and the work of other writers to explore these issues. And we can do some writing as well, taking real events of your time here in Sayulita, and making them into stories. It should be great fun!
