Intro to Travel Writing: Must Love Travel AND Words
March 8-11 2010 / Instructor: Giselle SmithGood travel writing is essentially observing the world around you and describing places in such a way that your readers want to go with you—or feel as if they have. This workshop will immerse you in the elements of good travel writing and give you tools for crafting your own great stories about your travels.
This workshop is for aspiring travel writers—travelers who love writing and writers who love traveling. We'll talk about what makes good travel writing, which is more about what makes good writing than it is what makes good travel. Simply having a great trip doesn’t guarantee a good story, but you can write a great travel story about even a bad trip.
We’ll break the writing process into parts with in-class (and out-of-class) exercises that explore description and narrative, telling your stories and telling those of the people you meet on your travels. We'll also work on story structure—how to frame a piece to hold your audience.
Whether your goal is to write engaging stories to share with friends, blog about your travels, or get pieces published in print or online, this workshop will help you feel more confident about your writing. In the last session, we’ll briefly cover story pitches and discuss possible avenues for getting your writing to a broader audience.
